2018 playaround workshop

2018 playaround workshop

playaround workshop 2018 – Post Science Fiction

This year 2018 marks the tenth anniversary of Playaround Workshop (PA). Launched in 2008 in the spirit of Floss Art for freedom, openness and sharing, PA has held various technology art and experimentational cross-field creative workshops in Taiwan. The workshops covered many themes and were conducted by lecturers, teaching assistants and saw huge turnout of participants, inspiring many aspiring young creators. Ten years later today, the alumni PA have made it in their respective fields. In keeping with PA’s core values, the ten year anniversary this year will also share more creative knowledge and experience and explore the possibility of pioneering experimental PA.

The theme of the 2018 PA is post science fiction. People now live in a world where the lines are blurred between science fiction and fantasies, science and construction, and art and consumption. Some things that used to be science fiction has the reality, while others are still wishful dreams. There is the fear and joy of what robotic and AI development could bring; Bitcoin’s instant-millionaire mindset; blockchain’s decentralization; big data as a double-edged sword in forgoing privacy and convenience; VR and AR being more attractive than the reality; genetic editing playing games with the forces of nature; mass customisation being more popular with the consumers; and technology art and new creative media art being squeezed into tiny hidden cameras.  With all that going on in the post science fiction world, what else is left  in our thinking, creating, retaliating, and preserving the past? Are humans really incapable of conquering the unknown from where they stand?

The 2018 Playaround Workshop consists of a series of events, including six inspiring short talks, eight workshops and Do-It-With-Others activities, a “Technology Art Experiment Innovation and Guidance Program” team sharing event, an experimental sound performance and a party to celebrate the tenth anniversary.

The short talk series consist of six sessions: Marc Dusseiller (Switzerland)’s “Open Culture”, Urs Gaudenz (Switzerland)’s “Speculative Futures of Open Science Hardware”, Shih Yi-shan (Taiwan)’s “New Space Narrative in the Digital Essence”, Tang Cheng-wei (Taiwan)’s “Going Forward Backwards, In the Annihilated Past”, Yu-Chiao Yang (Taiwan)’s “The Science Fiction in Folktale”, Hou June-Hao (Taiwan)’s “Community of People and Man-made Objects”.

The workshop will have eight sessions: Tuomo Tammenpää (Finland)’s “Time Capsules – concepts for cross-eon communication”, uses the example of Finland’s nuclear waste trying to let people in the distant future understand the warning symbols of our time. Jonathan Kemp (UK)’s “Sola Star” (Solaris) begins with the sci-fi remonstration: “We don’t need other worlds. All we need is a mirror” to explore the geology of Taipei and reflect some of its other-worldly impacts on the human psyche. Shigeru Kobayashi (Japan)’s “Re-Imagining through Sci-Fi Toys” attempts to deconstruct the time and space of past sci-fi toys and come up with new ways of play using contemporary technology in the contemporary setting. Keith Lam (Hong Kong)’s  “AKIRA” centers on the namesake character’s supernatural power in exploring the possibility man and machine interface. It uses low-fi method to make the body an operational interface, but it makes not a weapon but a musical instrument.

Marc Dusseiller (Switzerland)’s “Off Ground – Fly High”, is a response to today’s social environment, injustice, globalization and other issues. It adopts a new interdisciplinary approach and combines open source tools and hacking strategies to collaborate with people in different fields and implement environmental monitoring and artistic interpretation. Chun Lee (Taiwan)’s “Diddley Bow” is a single-stringed instrument. In this workshop, participants will learn how to make a single-string Diddley Bow and practice playing it. Max Schumacher (Germany)’s “Perphonance – subvert your smartphone” (Perphonance) is a word coined by the post-theatre. It means a performance created by a (smart) mobile phone. The workshop sets out to prove that a complete live (dance, drama, performing arts) performance can be created with a smartphone in hand. Li Yu (China)’s “Designing the next nature”, explores ways for humans to live in harmony with nature. The designs of the future are hidden in unknown phenomena, structures, and patterns of the living organism.

The workshop will also showcase the results of the teams that take part in the “Technology Art Experiment Innovation and Guidance Program”. Last but not least, the open field will invite the demos, Aluan Wang, Betty Apple, w6iw9i, and P.C.B. to throw a experimental sound performance. See you all at the 2018 playaround workshop!
